The March of the Living

The goal of the March of the Living is not so much to learn from or about history, but to enter into it, to learn the lessons of the past, and help lead the Jewish people into the future.

April 28, 2008 - Lodz

We've arrived in Poland! Thankfully, everything ran smoothly on the way.

Dinner tonight was in Warsaw, after which we headed up to the Lodz area. We have a short meeting with all participants to review policies and to go over the plans for Tuesday. Happily, we celebrated Andrew Kostin's 18th birthday with him.

Beginning on Thursday, when we're in Krakow, we'll post pictures on the website here, and we hope, some comments from the students.

Hoping you're all well at home!

Footstep Upon Footstep”

Tamar, you walk upon this solemn ground,
following the path that consumed the lives of many.
Silence hovers in the fog, masking all around,
to the point your breath can’t be heard by any.

Yet the sounds of the past
seep through the mask of silence.
Letting known the truth at last,
that you will not stand by in compliance,
for each and every day that goes by,
you carve out a new place in time.
Where you refuse to stand by as a mine.
Let it be known why we wept,
footstep upon footstep.

April 30, 2008 - Auschwitz

I was completely overwhelmed by what I saw today. I could not cry, but I also could not comprehend what I saw. It wasn’t just a photograph or story, but the real place. How can people complain about Poland when other people had to live in concentration camps? And then, how did people survive? Why don’t they tell us about what we saw in schools? The whole time, I was trying to visualize what it would have been, but it was so empty and green. So, I’m stuck.an

Leaving Poland behind feels like a relief, but it is something I will never forget. If it hadn’t been for the March of the Living, I don’t think I would have ever come here. I would never have gotten to witness all the things I’ve seen here: the camps, the ghettoes.
